Getting here

From Whiteley to our workshop

Join the M27 eastbound at junction 9 and leave at junction 11 for Fareham, then head south through Fareham to Newgate Lane. Hackett Way is off Newgate Lane, close to Speedfields Park.

Motorway driving is easy on a clutch, but a slipping one shows up quickly when you accelerate up the slip road. If revs climb without the car picking up, get it checked.

Rather not drive it? We’ll collect your car from Whiteley for free and bring it back when it’s fixed.

Common signs

Clutch trouble in Whiteley?

Clutches rarely fail without warning. Here’s what drivers usually notice, and what it tends to mean.

  • Slipping

Revs climb but the car doesn’t pick up speed, especially uphill or in a high gear.

Usually means: The clutch plate is worn and can’t grip.

  • High biting point

The clutch only grips right at the top of the pedal.

Usually means: Often the first sign of a worn clutch plate.

  • Juddering

The car shudders as you pull away from a standstill.

Usually means: A worn clutch, or a tired dual mass flywheel.

  • Heavy, soft or sticking pedal

The pedal feels wrong, sinks, or is slow to come back up.

Usually means: The hydraulics (a master or slave cylinder) or the cable.

  • Noise or rattle

Whirring when you press the pedal, or a rattle at idle.

Usually means: A worn release bearing, or the flywheel.

  • Burning smell

A sharp, hot smell after a hill start or slow traffic.

Usually means: The clutch is slipping and overheating.

Not sure which it is? You don’t need to be.

FAQs

Clutch questions, answered

How much does a clutch replacement cost?

It depends on the car. A small hatchback with a simple clutch costs a lot less than a diesel with a dual mass flywheel, which can more than double the parts bill. Send us your reg and we will price the right parts for your exact car, then give you one clear figure for parts and labour before we start.

How do I know if my clutch is going?

The usual signs are revs rising without the car speeding up (slipping), a biting point right at the top of the pedal, juddering as you pull away, a heavy or spongy pedal, noise when you press the pedal, or crunching when you change gear. A burning smell on a hill start is another clue.

Do you collect my car?

Yes, collection and delivery is free. We pick your car up from home or work, fix it and bring it back, so you don’t have to drive on a failing clutch or wait around at the garage. Even if the clutch has gone and the car can’t be driven, we will still arrange to pick it up.

Can I keep driving with a slipping clutch?

For a short while, but it only gets worse, and it tends to fail at the worst moment, often on a hill or when overtaking. Driving on a badly slipping clutch can also damage the flywheel, which makes the repair dearer. Best to get it looked at sooner rather than later.

Do you replace the flywheel as well?

Only if it needs it. Many modern diesels, and some petrol cars, have a dual mass flywheel that wears out alongside the clutch. We check it and tell you what we find. If it is fine, we leave it alone.
