Clutch replacement, explained
A clutch is a wear part. Every pull away and every gear change wears the friction plate a little, and eventually it starts to slip, judder or bite right at the top of the pedal. When that happens, the fix is a new clutch kit: friction plate, pressure plate and release bearing.
We price the correct kit for your exact car from your reg, check the flywheel while the gearbox is out, and give you one clear figure before we start. Nothing extra gets done without your yes.
Signs you need a new clutch
Revs rise, car doesn’t
The engine revs climb but the car barely picks up speed, worst in higher gears or on hills.
High biting point
The clutch only grips right at the top of the pedal travel.
Juddering pull away
The car shudders as you let the clutch out from a standstill.
Burning smell
A sharp, hot smell after a hill start or a bit of slipping.
What a clutch replacement involves
- 1Confirm it really is the clutch, not the hydraulics or a cable
- 2Price the correct kit for your car and agree it with you
- 3Remove the gearbox and fit the new clutch kit
- 4Check the flywheel and tell you honestly what we find
- 5Refit, adjust and road test before you collect
Free collection and delivery
Don’t drive around on a failing clutch. We collect your car from home or work in Fareham, Gosport and nearby, fix it and bring it back. No charge for the trip.
Clutch gone and the car won’t move? We’ll still come and get it.
How long does a clutch last?
Commonly somewhere between 60,000 and 100,000 miles, but it varies a lot. Lots of town driving, towing and holding the car on the clutch on hills all shorten its life.
Should the flywheel be changed at the same time?
Only if it is worn. We check it while the gearbox is out, because that is the one time it can be checked properly without paying for the labour twice.
Can you just adjust my clutch instead?
Most modern cars have self adjusting clutches, so there is nothing to adjust. On older cars with a cable, adjusting it can help. We will tell you if that is all it needs.
