Dual mass flywheel, explained
Many diesels and plenty of modern petrol cars use a dual mass flywheel. It has two halves joined by springs that soak up engine vibration, which makes the car smoother and quieter. Over time those springs wear, and the flywheel starts to rattle, knock or judder.
A dual mass flywheel sits between the engine and the clutch, so it is usually replaced at the same time as the clutch. We check yours properly and only replace it if it needs it.
Signs of a worn dual mass flywheel
Rattle at idle
A rattling or chattering noise at tickover that changes or stops when you press the clutch.
Knock when stopping
A clunk as you switch the engine off or as the car comes to a stop.
Judder or vibration
Vibration through the pedal or the car as you pull away or at low revs.
Rough in low gears
A harsh, lumpy feel at low speed that wasn’t there before.
How we handle it
- 1Listen to it and road test to narrow down the cause
- 2Check the flywheel when the gearbox is out
- 3Show you what we found and price it before going further
- 4Fit a new flywheel with the clutch if needed, so you only pay the labour once
- 5Road test before you collect
Free collection and delivery
Don’t drive around on a failing clutch. We collect your car from home or work in Fareham, Gosport and nearby, fix it and bring it back. No charge for the trip.
Clutch gone and the car won’t move? We’ll still come and get it.
Can I swap a dual mass flywheel for a solid one?
Conversion kits exist for some cars. They are cheaper but usually make the car noisier and can add vibration. We will talk you through the pros and cons for your car if it is an option.
Why is a dual mass flywheel so expensive?
It is a heavy, precisely balanced part with springs and bearings inside, so the part itself costs more than a solid flywheel. The labour is mostly the same as a clutch job, which is why it makes sense to do both together.
