Clutch hydraulics, explained
Most cars use hydraulics to work the clutch. A master cylinder at the pedal pushes fluid to a slave cylinder at the gearbox. If either one leaks or wears, or air gets in, the pedal goes soft, sticks down or drops to the floor, and you can struggle to get into gear.
Some cars use a cable instead, which can stretch or snap. Either way, it is often a smaller job than a full clutch replacement. We find the real cause first and tell you.
Signs of a hydraulic or cable problem
Pedal on the floor
The pedal drops and stays down, or comes back up slowly.
Soft or spongy pedal
The pedal feels vague and the biting point moves about.
Crunching into gear
The clutch doesn’t fully disengage, so gears grind or won’t go in.
Fluid leak
Fluid in the footwell or under the car near the gearbox.
What we check and fix
- 1Check the fluid, pedal, master and slave cylinders and pipes
- 2Check the cable and its adjustment on cable operated cars
- 3Replace the worn part and bleed the system
- 4Explain if the slave cylinder is inside the gearbox, which means more labour
- 5Road test before you collect
Free collection and delivery
Don’t drive around on a failing clutch. We collect your car from home or work in Fareham, Gosport and nearby, fix it and bring it back. No charge for the trip.
Clutch gone and the car won’t move? We’ll still come and get it.
Is it safe to drive with a clutch pedal that sticks down?
No. If the clutch won’t disengage properly you may not be able to change gear or stop smoothly. Leave it where it is and call us. We’ll arrange to pick it up.
Why is a concentric slave cylinder dearer to replace?
It sits inside the bell housing, so the gearbox has to come out to reach it, much like a clutch job. If your clutch is also worn, it often makes sense to do both at once.
